Welcome back to Cara’s Corner! This week, I want to share with you all some terms your students use daily. Typically, students shorten the names of university buildings, offices, etc. into nicknames or acronyms. While students use these terms and lingo quite often, few people outside the University know what they are referring to. I want to give you all a guide to keep you up to date!

On Campus Buildings-

• JC = Johnson Center
• Sub 1 = Student Union Building 1
• AFC = Aquatic Fitness Center
• RAC = Recreation Athletic Complex
• SS = Southside Dining Hall
• CFA = Center for the Arts
• EBA = EagleBank Arena
• The Globe = Angel Cabrera Global Center
• Mason Square = Arlington Campus of GMU

Off-Campus Buildings-

• UMall = University Mall

Parking-

• Rapp Deck = Rappahannock Parking Deck

Student Offices-

• NSFP = New Student & Family Programs
• ODS = Office of Disability Services
• LEAD = Leadership Education and Development
• SI = Student Involvement
• SSAC = Student Support and Advocacy Center
• CAPS = Counseling and Psychological Services
• CCEE = Center for Culture, Equity, and Empowerment
• CSS = Contemporary Student Services
• OIPS = Office of International Programs

Colleges & Schools-

• CEC = College of Engineering and Computing
• CEHD = College of Education and Human Development
• CHSS = College of Humanities and Social Sciences
• CVPA = College of Visual and Performing Arts
• CCOB = Costello College of Business

Knowing these terms can help you all better understand and communicate with your students and other faculty on campus.
